Meet Your Chapel Hill Orthodontist
Dr. Gavin Heymann graduated from Chapel Hill High School and pursued his undergraduate education at UNC Chapel Hill, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology. He attended the UNC School of Dentistry, from which he graduated with his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the top of his class in 2005. He remained at UNC for his specialty training in orthodontics, and received the Andrew McArthur Brooks Fellowship, as well as earned a Master of Science and an orthodontic certificate from one of the most well-respected orthodontic programs in the world.
After earning her undergraduate and dental degrees at UNC, Dr. Katya Skillestad went on to study orthodontics at Texas A&M University in Dallas, where she won the prestigious award of Resident of the Year from an esteemed orthodontic journal.
Chapel Hill Braces
Traditional braces continue to be one of the most trusted orthodontic treatments. This is because they are efficient. Overall treatment time can be slightly reduced because traditional braces sometimes work faster at closing gaps and aligning teeth that other options might. Chapel Hill braces are an excellent choice for correcting a number of simple and complex tooth issues. The components work together to apply gentle pressure, which through regular adjustments with our doctors, will gradually move the teeth into their desired positions. The components are metal or ceramic brackets attached to the teeth and connected by wires and tiny rubber bands or elastics.

The Chapel Hill Invisalign system uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually move the teeth into alignment, rather than brackets and bands. This option is currently the top alternative to traditional braces and is incredibly popular with both patients and orthodontists.
Made out of comfortable plastic, Invisalign aligners fit snugly over your teeth. The trays are virtually invisible and are usually switched out every 1-2 weeks for the next in the series to keep teeth moving in the right direction! If you don’t wear your aligners as intended, your treatment may take longer. Aligners must be worn 20-22 hours per day throughout treatment in order for them to do their job.
